Heraklion

As the capital of Crete, Heraklion is a lively and captivating city in the Mediterranean region. It is considered the island’s commercial and technological hub and occupies a significant geopolitical position in the southeastern Mediterranean Sea, connecting many cultures and three continents.

The city’s “old town” areas, established during medieval times, are perfect for taking a stroll through the city’s heart. The Venetian Chandakas’ fortified enclosure, dating back to the 15th century, is one of the most notable monuments of its kind in the entire Mediterranean basin.

The Archaeological Museum and the Historical Museum house various fascinating finds from different periods and areas of Crete, which visitors can admire. Knossos Palace, located 5km south of Heraklion, was a major trading center for approximately two thousand years. It boasted large palace buildings, extensive workshop installations, and luxurious rock-cut caves and tholos tombs.

Heraklion is also a bustling shopping destination, with numerous shops within walking distance. Talos Plaza, a shopping center in the city’s coastal area, provides a convenient one-stop-shop experience. Additionally, open markets are set up in several regions every weekday.

Crete has one of the world’s oldest and most delicious gastronomic traditions, encompassing various tastes, aromas, ingredients, and skills from prehistoric times to the present day. You can experience Cretan cuisine by visiting traditional tavernas or modern restaurants throughout the city.

When it comes to nightlife, Heraklion has plenty to offer. Nightclubs, bars, traditional coffee shops, and modern cafes are located throughout the city center and coastal area, offering stunning sea views.
